Virginia City...  an eclectic mix of Wild West, Mark Twain Adventures, and the distant echo of prosperity from the silver in the hills. Naturally, such a unique place hosts an annual event that is equally as random!  Yes…  Over the last 65 years, this little historic town has celebrated and embraced the International Camel and Ostrich Races.  It’s like the true American antithesis of a British horse race. However, with these races, no known betting system exists.  A “sure bet,” however, is the entertainment value and laughter as you witness the unpredictable nature of the competition!  Make a day out of it, complete with a cool drink in one of Virginia City’s old saloons, a trip to the retro candy store, and a ghost tour at a haunted hotel!  For more information about ticketing and food & beverage, go to VisitVirginiaCityNV.com.

THE GREAT RENO BALLOON RACE

The Great Reno Balloon Race is more than just a festival… It’s an experience that captures the imagination and hearts of all who attend. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned attendee, the sight of those colorful balloons rising into the sky is something you’ll never forget. If you are a newbie to this cherished annual event, here’s a brief rundown of the daily schedule:
3:30 am- Gates Open
5:00 am- Super Glow Show: A handful of glowing balloons act as a beacon for sleepy spectators heading out to the launch field. This feature showcases 35+ balloons glowing and twinkling to music across the field.
5:30 am- Dawn Patrol: A handful of balloons qualified to fly in the dark embark on the dangerous task as atmospheric conditions change drastically when the sun begins to rise. Balloonists glow, twinkle, and soar with choreographed music across a darkened sky… an amazing sight to behold!
7:00 am- Mass Ascension: Upwards of 100 balloons will launch! The splendor of these unique and beautiful balloons thrills the crowd as they enjoy the multitude of vibrant sights and sounds in the early morning light.
8:00 am- Tethered Balloon Rides: Several sponsored balloons are offering free rides while tethered. These rides begin at 8 am. For more information, visit RenoBalloon.com.

HARMONY ON THE RIVER- Saturday, September 12 (6-8 pm)
Hosted by the City of Reno and Sierra Tap House, this newly imagined free community event is set to enchant you in the picturesque Reno Riverwalk District. Happening at the West Street Plaza, next to Wingfield Park, you’ll immerse yourself in live music by the talented Reno Philharmonic, savor delicious food from local food trucks, and sip on refreshing beverages from the Sierra Tap House Beer Garden.

This Free Family Concert offers your whole family’s introduction to the orchestra! Enjoy a supreme work that is heroic, somber, and ecstatic at Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. Music Director & Conductor Laura Jackson leads the Reno Phil Orchestra in this masterpiece, which redefined the symphonic art form forever. The Reno Phil’s own Eric Fassbender brings his technical prowess to Carl Maria von Weber’s Concerto for Bassoon. Opening the celebration, the sparkling Kauyumari (meaning “blue deer”) by Gabriela Ortiz explores music’s power to grant us access to the intangible, healing our wounds and binding us to what can only be expressed through sound.
